Evening dinner at the hotel. (D)
3rd Day: ERDING/RIEDENBURG
After breakfast we proceed to Riedenburg where we check-in at Eggersberg Castle.
Built around 1600 during the heyday of the late renaissance period, the castle is situated next to the site of original Burg Eggersberg which was destroyed in the 15th century during the Löwler War. After the castle was accquired by Dominicus von Bassus in 1684, it stayed in the family for over 250 years and served as a hunting lodge.
We will visit the home of the World’s largest crystal cluster which can be found in the Crystal Museum.
In the afternoon we will have a glance at the Castle of Prunn located on a steep Jurassic rock (best kept knight’s castle):
Nevertheless, the comparatively small castle of Prunn is one of the best-known castles of Bavaria owing to its unique site and the harmonious combination of natural scenery and architectural significance.
Dinner at the hotel. (B, D)
4th Day: RIEDENBURG – KELHEIM - RIEDENBURG
Breakfast. Our morning trip takes us to Rosenburg Castle. Falcons, eagles and vultures are showing breathtaking flying displays.
Rosenburg Castle, probably built in the middle of the 12th century, was acquired by the Dukes of Bavaria in 1196, and from then on remained in the hands of the House of Wittelsbach.
Boat ride from Kelheim to the Monastery of Weltenburg.
The monastery church, built by the Asam brothers, is one of the gems of Bavarian Baroque architecture. People have been settling on this headland since the Stone Age. Celtic and Roman people had built shrines here. After the decline of the Roman Empire the oldest monastery on the right side of the river Rhine was founded here around the year 610 A.D. in order to do missionary work in the duchy of Baiern.
Afterwards ride on the Ludwigsbahn, a tiny train which takes you to the Befreiungshalle (Hall of Liberation).
Dinner at the hotel. (B,D)
5th Day: RIEDENBURG – COBURG
After breakfast we continue our trip to Coburg.
Coburg combines art, culture and history like no other city. The former residence was mainly influenced by the dukes of the former Saxony-Coburg and Gotha dukedom. Their marriage politics created connections to almost all European dynasties.
The main one was the marriage between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha.
Experience the world of high nobility, marvel at the art collections or the historic old town with its towers, alleys and churches.
Unique right from the start! A little fortification, and then off we go!
We meet our tour guide at Marktplatz in Coburg - depending on how appetites are developing - the unofficial program could begin with hearty Coburg grilled bratwurst. They are grilled on pine cones and are almost like a symbol of the cityscape.
And then it's off on a two-hour tour of discovery through the city. An experienced tour guide will show us the most important beauties of the city, but will also direct our attention to many hidden gems.
One of the highlights of the tour will be the visit toof the Coburg Fortress:
The Coburg fortress, which is also called the "Franconian Crown" because of its beauty and dominating location, rises high above the city with its mighty walls and towers. Covering approximately 135 x 260 meters, it is one of the largest and among the best preserved castle complexes in Germany.
Extraordinary collections of armor and weapons of war, partly originating from the former armory of the fortress, hunting weapons and hunting equipment, precious handicrafts, the oldest preserved carriages in the world, the great Hofstube with the largest completely preserved cast iron stove, pictures from Dürer, Cranach the Elder and Grünewald make a visit to Coburg Fortress into a one-of-a-kind experience.
We check-in at Hohenstein Castle.
Dinner. (B, D)
6th Day: COBURG – SESSLACH - COBURG
After breakfast we enjoy our trip to Sesslach.
The town of Sesslach, district of Coburg, with its unique old town centre, individually situated, fully girded by town walls, often used as a film set (Luther, Robber Hotzenplotz) closes its medieval gates at the weekends to offer its guests a relaxed atmosphere in a historic backdrop.
We enjoy a walking tour through this old town, stop at a nice inn for lunch (not included) and find some time to discover the old lanes on our own.
Afterwards we drive back to Hohenstein Castle.
Dinner. (B, D)
7th Day: COBURG – ROTHENBURG – COLMBERG
After breakfast we will travel to Rothenburg o.d.Tauber:
A walk around Rothenburg, a small town on Germany's idyllic Romantic Road is like taking a journey down the centuries. Its proud town hall, lofty towers and stout town walls, its churches and patrician houses bear witness to its history as a powerful free imperial town. Here history is not just dates, it is a vivid and still palpable experience. With its elaborate half-timbered buildings and imposing fortifications, the Rothenburg townscape is still much as it was in the Middle Ages.
We will find some time to shop before we drive to Colmberg and check in at Burg Hotel Colmberg.
This evening we will enjoy a delicious knight’s feast. (B, D)
8th Day: COLMBERG - ANSBACH – ERDING/MUNICH
Breakfast. After check-out we will proceed to the town of Ansbach where we will visit the Margrave Residence of Ansbach:
The Residence evolved from a medieval complex. Its Gotische Halle (Gothic Hall), a feature of the original building, today houses an important collection of Ansbach faience and porcelain. The Residence was rebuilt in its present form by Gabriel di Gabrieli and Karl Friedrich von Zocha in the 18th century.
Afterwards we will enjoy the walking tour “Following the footsteps of Kasper Hauser”.
We continue our trip to Erding.
After checking-in our farewell dinner will be served at the hotel. (B, D)
